Photograph showing the arrival of the Tibetan entourage which accompanied the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso (1876-1933) or the 9th Panchen or Tashi Lama, Thubten Choekyi Nyima (1883-1937), who was a very senior monk, considered second in ranking to the Dalai Lama. Here we can see a number of people on horseback, some with loaded with drums and musical instruments, in an area by tents. Queen Mary captioned the photographs on this page as 'Visit of Tashi Lama'.
The Dalai Lama was in exile from Tibet, after the British invasion of Tibet in 1904, but he was keen to establish good relations with European powers in order to safeguard Tibet. There were a number of official meetings between the British and the Tibetans, on 2nd and 5th January 1906, as well as an informal meeting at the races on 30 December 1905.Provenance
