Photograph of the western building, a mosque, in the Taj Mahal complex in Agra, the iconic seventeenth-century mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal (1593-1631) who died in childbirth. This building is rectangular, built in red sandstone, topped by three lotus domes and cupolas at each corner, and completed about 1643. The Taj Mahal is considered the ultimate Islamic paradise tomb-garden with its four-square gardens, divided by four wide waterways and subdivided into smaller waterways.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, later King George V and Queen Mary visited the Taj Mahal twice, on 16th and 17th December 1905, once by moonlight.Provenance
