Photograph of an avenue of spindle palm trees, called Rodrigues palms. The Latin name for the trees, which are native to Rodrigues Island, Mauritius is Hyophorbe verschaffeltii. Queen Mary captioned the photograph 'Pamplemousses Gardens', which is a reference to Pamplemousse, a district of Port Louis, which has the National Botanical Garden, established during the French colonial period. The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, later King George V and Queen Mary, visited Mauritius, after the royal visit to Australia and New Zealand, in August 1901.
