A photograph taken at The Hendre, Monmouth, the home of John Rolls, 1st Baron Llangattock (1837-1912) and Lady Georgiana Marcia Llangattock (d. 1920), of Queen Mary (1867-1953) when Princess Mary, Duchess of York, having her first ride in 'Mr Rolls' motor car'. The Duchess is seated in the passenger seat, next to the driver, with Lady Llangattock and Eva Dugdale in the back seats. The car is being driven by Charles Stewart Rolls (1877-1910), youngest son of Lord and Lady Llangattock. He co-founded the Rolls-Royce car manufacturing firm with Frederick Henry Royce. There is an inscription underneath the photograph written by Queen Mary, 'my first drive in a motor car! / to visit Raglan etc'. The car is believed to be a 1900 model Panhard & Levassor 12CV B1 M4F.
The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York stayed at The Hendre, near Monmouth, for a week, and visited Monmouth, Tintern Abbey, Raglan castle.Provenance
