This is one of the memorial busts of Prince Albert made by the British neo-classical sculptor William Theed, which Queen Victoria commissioned after the death of her husband in December 1861. It was presented by Queen Victoria to her son Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, for his birthday on 9th December 1862. The front is inscribed 'Albert H.R.H. The Prince Consort. Dec. 1861', and the back, 'To / Albert Edward / Prince of Wales, in remembrance of / the greatest and best fathers, / from his broken hearted mother / Victoria R Nov.9.1862 / W. Theed, SC / OSBORNE, 1862.'

William Theed was one of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's favourite artists. Two weeks after the death of Prince Albert, Theed was engaged to begin work on a bust of the Prince with uncovered shoulders at Osborne House in the Isle of Wight, where Queen Victoria had retired. This marble portrait bust is a replica of the original that was made for the Blue Room at Windsor Castle, where Prince Albert had died. Prince Albert is shown looking slightly to his left with a bare torso revealing his chest and shoulders and with his hair swept forward towards the temples.
