James Valentine (1815-79)
Glassalt Shiel, Balmoral estate after 1873
-
Photograph from an album of the Glassalt Shiel taken from a small stream leading to Loch Muick in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. A wooden and wire fence runs through the stream. The ground floor features bay windows with a gable roof above. On the right of the background stand smaller outbuildings beyond which are hills.
The Glassalt Shiel was constructed in 1868 on the fringes of Loch Muick. Due its isolated position, the building was often used by Queen Victoria as a private retreat from the court during her stays in Balmoral Castle. -
