Photograph of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) seated on her pony 'Fyvie' which stands in left side profile. Holding the horse's reigns is John Brown (1827-83) who stands facing the viewer.
As a tribute to her recently deceased husband, the Queen commissioned the photograph to be taken on the second anniversary of her trip into the Highlands when she rode with Prince Albert and her Keepers. The photograph was published by A Marion & Co. and is a cropped version of the original portrait featuring the Queen with John Brown; John Grant, who was pictured standing on the right, has been omitted. When issued to the public, the photograph quickly became Wilson's most popular image of the Queen, sales being prompted in sympathy for her bereavement.Provenance
Given to Queen Mary by an old gentleman in 1932
