-
Carte-de-visite photograph of Princess Dagmar of Denmark (1847-1928) and her first fiance Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovitch (1843-65), eldest son of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. They are both wearing out-door dress; Dagmar is wearing a loose jacket with contrast piping, over a skirt embroidered with a geometric pattern. There is a plinth to right and drapery above, and a painted backdrop of an ornamental table and vase.
This photograph was probably taken on the occasion of their engagement in Copenhagen in 1864. Nicholas died of meningitis on 22 April 1865. Eventually Dagmar married his brother who became Tsar Alexander III. -
