Photograph of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) seated, wearing black with a hood and holding the infant Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine (1863-1950), later Lady Mountbatten, who faces three-quarters to the left.
This is one of a series of portaits that Wilson was to take of Queen Victoria and her family and were to be his last as informal portraits featuring members of the royal family. They were published by A Marion Son and Co who purchased the publication rights from Wilson for these portraits in the knowledge that there was high demand for images of royal subjects. On the 21st October 1863, The Queen wrote in her journal that she 'Was photographed on the lower Terrace by Wilson, & then went for a turn in the pony chair.'
