Photograph showing the ruins of stone columns with supports at Virginia Water, Windsor.
The Leptis Magna ruins are named after the Roman city on the shores of the Mediterranean from where they came. They were taken back to England in 1816 by Commander Smythe for the Prince Regent. Initially, the stones were deposited with the British Museum but in 1828, they were erected by Sir Jeffry Wyatville at Virginia Water on the south side of the lake. -
