Photograph of a monument erected to the memory of Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse in the woods of Garmaddie on the Balmoral estate. The monument is of a large, celtic cross with a foliate design, near the base of which is an inscription dedicated to the memory of Princess Alice. The cross stands on a large mound of stones compacted together and flanked by two stone benches.
Princess Alice was Queen Victoria's second daughter and was born on the 25th April 1843 at Buckingham Palace. The Princess married Prince Louis of Hesse in a small ceremony in Osborne House on the 1st July 1862. On the 14 December 1878, Alice died from diphtheria and was buried at the Grand Ducal Mausoleum at Rosenhohe near Darmstadt. -
