An inkjet printed iPad drawing featuring the cypher EIIR and the date. In 2012, members of the Royal Academy presented Queen Elizabeth II with a portfolio of 105 works on paper to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. This followed the presentation of similar portfolios by the Royal Academicians in the Queen's Coronation and Silver Jubilee years, 1953 and 1977.
David Hockney, one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century, was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991. He began making iPad drawings in about 2008, and created this celebratory work for the Diamond Jubilee portfolio. In 2012 Hockney was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II to the Order of Merit. Limited to 24 members at any one time, the Order recognises superlative achievements in the arts and sciences.Provenance
