Decorated glass bowl with inscription, and fitted presentation box
Timothy Harris (b.1961) was the son of Michael Harris (1933-1994), one of the pioneers of the British Studio Glass Movement. As a young boy, the artist was intrigued by his father’s studio on the Isle of Wight and from the age of thirteen began to make small glass birds of his own.
In 1990 Harris produced a piece of cameo glass for the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. In the same year he was appointed to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST).
In 2012, Harris was selected to prepare a gift for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on behalf of the people of the Isle of Wight. He based the piece on the ‘Seascape’ design developed by his father in 1985, which incorporates blue and white striped shards to mimic swirling waves. Harris presented his jubilee bowl to The Queen in person at a ceremony at Cowes. Six large, and sixty small, commemorative bowls of the same design, but without a presentation inscription, were also made.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the artist on behalf of the People of the Isle of Wight for the Diamond Jubilee, Cowes, 25 July 2012.
