Black-and-white photograph of Prince William of Gloucester.
A modern style characterises this striking portrait of Prince William of Gloucester, taken while a student in Cambridge. The prince’s intense gaze and perfectly groomed appearance are captured by Hustler in a shallow depth of field, giving the portrait a three-dimensional quality.
Tom Hustler worked as an assistant for Dorothy Wilding and eventually purchased her studio and archive in 1958. A document dated 20 June 1960, informing Buckingham Palace about the new studio arrangements following the takeover, states: ‘Miss Lester is now the actual photographer, taking portraits in the old Wilding Style while Mr Hustler takes portraits in the more modern style’. -
