Queen Elizabeth II on Coronation Day 2 - 2 Jun 1953
Gelatin silver print | 25.2 x 20.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2119586
-
A black-and-white photograph of Queen Elizabeth II, seated in left side profile and wearing the Coronation Robe and Imperial State Crown. The Queen holds the Sceptre in her right hand and the Orb in her left, and is posed against a backdrop of Westminister Abbey.
This alternative view, less well-known than the image selected as the official coronation portrait (see RCIN 2999885), hides a tiny self-portrait of Cecil Beaton. Perhaps on purpose, or just captured by mistake, the shiny gold surface of the Orb shows a reflection of both the sitter and the photographer. The sitting took place in the afternoon of the Coronation in the Green Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace. -
