Colour photograph. The Duchess of Cornwall, now Queen of the United Kingdom, standing with her back to the viewer in Clarence House as she examines a painting by the artist Paul Nash.
The then Duchess of Cornwall took part in this Vogue photoshoot to mark her 75th birthday. Published in the July issue, these various poses show different facets and interests. The first captures the sitter in a traditional stance in a Bruce Oldfield gown; the second reveals the sitter’s passion for literature; the final image (seen here) shows the sitter at an unusual angle from the back, admiring Paul Nash’s Landscape of the Vernal Equinox. The image also conveys the photographer’s own interest in the painting – Nash is one of Jamie Hawkesworth’s favourite artists – through the sitter’s gaze.
Hawkesworth only employs analogue photography and the Mamiya RB67, a medium format camera, remains his favourite. He also prefers to print his own work himself. -
