Colour photograph of Diana, Princess of Wales. 1/4 length portrait.
Commissioned by Vanity Fair, the images from the sitting were intended both for publication and to support a charity sale of Diana, Princess of Wales’s dresses at Christie’s in New York. Mario Testino, celebrated for his luxurious fashion prints, wanted to portray the princess in an informal and spontaneous way, with a natural hairstyle, minimal makeup and without jewellery. This graceful portrait of the Princess was not included in the Vanity Fair issue and was her last official sitting.
While shot on film, this photograph was later printed using digital technology. Digital chromogenic prints are produced through the traditional use of light, albeit in laser or LEDs form, to transfer an image from a digital file onto light-sensitive paper, then processed as a traditional chromogenic print.Provenance
Presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II by the photographer, May 2022
