Having been commissioned to photograph Prince William for his official 21st birthday portrait in 2003, Mario Testino continued to photograph other members of the Prince’s family over the following decade, including the official engagement portrait of Prince and Princess of Wales.

Of his work with the royal couple, Testino insisted he had very little to do with the outcome. This informal photograph was taken at St James’s Palace, after the formal portrait was completed. While the photographer’s team were packing up the equipment, Testino captured this joyful and spontaneous moment.
