Photograph of General Sir Dighton Macnaghten Probyn (1833-1924) with an elephant. He is standing in front of the elephant, holding a stick in his right hand and talking to the man standing beside him to the right. There is an Indian attendant in the howdah on the elephant's back who is passing a rifle down to another man below. There are several other attendants nearby and a camp can be seen in the distance to the right.
This is one of a series of photographs from a published volume documenting the tour the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, made of India in 1875-76.Provenance
