The Home of the Fakir Favoured by Maharaja Sir Jung Bahadur Rana 1875-6
-
Photograph of the home of the fakir favoured by Maharaja Sir Jung Bahadur Rana. The fakir is sitting on the ground in front of a tent and is wearing a cloak and turban. He is holding a string of beads in his right hand. A canopy made from branches has been constructed in front of the tent. There are a number of metal cooking utensils on the ground around him.
This is one of a series of photographs from a published volume documenting the tour the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, made of the Indian subcontinent in 1875-76. Fakirs were travelling Holy men, though the term also implied a begging man. This fakir lived under the protection of the Maharaja.Provenance
Presented to Alexandra, Princess of Wales by her husband the Prince of Wales at Christmas 1876
