A Hunting Cheetah 1875-6
-
Photograph of a hunting cheetah. The cheetah is standing facing right with a cart pulled by two bullocks alongside it. Five attendants, wearing robes and turbans, are sitting on or leaning against the cart. There are trees behind.
This is one of a series of photographs from a published volume documenting the tour the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, made of India in 1875-76. The accompanying text explains that this breed of cheetah was used in India to catch antelopes. Carts could be driven close to antelopes because they were used to their presence from agricultural use, and then the cheetah could be released to quickly catch the antelope.Provenance
Presented to Alexandra, Princess of Wales by her husband the Prince of Wales at Christmas 1876
