Photograph of Sir Pratap Singh, Maharajah of Orchha (1854-1930) on the state elephant. The Maharaja is sitting in the howdah on top of the elephant with an attendant who is holding a fan. The elephant has embellished cloths over its head and body. A group of attendants, carrying a variety of fans, parasols and spears, are standing to either side. There is a camp behind.
This is one of a series of photographs from a published volume documenting the tour the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, made of India in 1875-76. The accompanying caption notes that this elephant was the tallest in northern India.Provenance
