Photograph of the Chinese Dining Room, then known as Queen Victoria's Lunch Room, at Buckingham Palace. It shows two of the painted chinoiserie panels by Robert Jones (RCIN 755), that was originally for the Banqueting Room at Brighton Pavilion. There are three vast urns on stands by windows, converted into oil lamps (RCIN 204), and elaborate over-door arched panels (RCIN 756), fitted over painted doors. In addition there is a surprising lily-shaped chandelier hanging from the ceiling. On the mantelpiece is a monumental clock under a glass frame, the 'Kylin clock' (RCIN 2867), accompanied by a pair of candelabra (RCIN 203).
The Chinese Dining Room is one of a number of early Victorian Chinese room in the east wing of Buckingham Palace, re-using some of the salvaged fittings and furnishings from George IV's Brighton Pavilion (which was sold to Brighton town council for £99,500 in 1846). Queen Mary further enhanced the chinoiserie with the help of fashionable decorators White Allom, in the 1920s. -
