Photograph of the Imperial throne in the St Andrew Hall at the Grand Kremlin Palace. The throne is on a raised platform at the end of the room, surrounded by an ornate stone porch. Above it there is a motif of golden rays with two emblems of St Andrew below. The Kremlin is a fortified complex of palaces and cathedrals in Moscow. The Grand Kremlin Palace is the largest building in the Kremlin and was built between 1837 and 1849. It has five reception rooms named after the Orders of the Russian Empire, including this hall named for St Andrew.
Provenance
Probably presented to the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, and the Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra, following their visit to Russia for the wedding celebrations of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna in 1874
