Sir Benjamin Stone (1838-1914)
Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London 1898
-
Photograph of a group of thirteen Yeoman Warders standing on, and in front, of the entrance steps to the Tower of London. They are shown wearing their more informal uniform of dark blue. They are posed with their hands by their side, facing towards the viewer. The Chief Yeoman Warder stands at the front of the group, in the centre of the photograph.
The Yeomen Warders are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. They are responsible for looking after prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels and they are also perceived as a tourist attraction in their own right. While their role is usually confined to the Tower of London, the Yeomen Warders do take part in one State ceremony: at Coronations they form a guard of honour inside the annexe at Westminster Abbey. -
