Sir Benjamin Stone (1838-1914)
The Ancient Ceremony of the Keys 1898
-
Photograph of the ancient Ceremony of the Keys. At the centre of the image is a group of six figures: five members of the Tower of London Guard and a Chief Yeoman Warder, dressed in a Tudor Watchcoat. The Guardsmen carry bayonets and one also carries a lantern. The Warder carries a large bunch of keys in his right hand. The figures are standing on a cobbled street and are framed by an archway with a portcullis in the background.
The traditional locking up of the Tower of London has taken place every night since the fourteenth century. Although the monarch no longer resides there, it is important to protect the many precious items held therein, including the Crown Jewels. -
