Sir Benjamin Stone (1838-1914)
Traitors' Gate at the Tower of London 1898
-
Photograph of Traitors' Gate viewed from within the Tower of London complex. In the foreground there is a Yeoman Warder who is standing and facing the viewer. In the background, standing beyond an archway, there is a Tower Guardsman who is holding a bayonet. On the right of the scene is an open archway at ground level, surmounted by an upper storey featuring three latticed windows.
Traitors' Gate is the water-gate entrance to the Tower of London complex and forms part of St. Thomas' Tower, which was built to provide additional royal accommodation. Its name derives from the number of prisoners accused of treason who passed through it. Prisoners arrived by barge via the Thames. They passed under London Bridge where the severed heads of recently executed prisoners were displayed on pikes. -
