The Queen's Private Dining and Lunch Room, Buckingham Palace 1873
-
Photograph of the Queen's Dining and Lunch Room, now known as the Chinese Dining Room. The walls are hung with three Chinoiserie panels by Robert Jones, from a set of four originally commissioned by George IV for the Brighton Pavilion (RCIN 755); there is a large flower-shaped chandelier, one of a pair (RCIN 2338). On the massive fireplace is the 'Kylin clock' under a glass case (RCIN 2867) and a pair of candelabras (RCIN 203). In the centre of the room is a highly-polished or lacquered circular table. On either sides of the fireplace are a pair of side table with chinoiserie decorations, and over-sized East Asian pots.
The Chinese Dining Room is one of a number of early Victorian Chinese room in the east wing of Buckingham Palace, re-using some of the salvaged fittings and furnishings from George IV's Brighton Pavilion (which was sold to Brighton town council for £99,500 in 1846). Queen Mary further enhanced the chinoiserie with the help of fashionable decorators White Allom, in the 1920s.
This photograph is similar but not the same as another photograph in Album A, RCIN 2101755, which is probably from a different negative. This view is more cropped on the left and has 'more window'. -
