Photograph of Princess Louise's Bedroom (F228), Windsor Castle. There are many pictures on the wall and over the doorway, including a painting by Queen Victoria of her children in the tragedy of Athalie (RCIN 403670), a cameo of prince Albert, a portrait of Prince Albert with a horse by Francis Grant (RCIN 400584), a portrait of Princess Charlotte of Belgium by J Phillips (RCIN 406939), an oval drawing of Prince Albert with his baby daughter Victoria by Landseer (RCIN 45074), a lithograph of the young Princess Alexandra in her wedding dress by Winterhalter; and three unidentified prints or pictures.
A single bed is placed against the wall, with a washbasin and washing utensils, the wall being protected by a curtained rail. Next to the washstand is a cabinet. In the middle of the room is a covered table and footstool, and a single chair. The wallpaper is a trellis pattern with small crosses picked out in gold, and a double border, one of a pale lozenge pattern and the other, darker and gothic-floral wallpaper border.
Princess Louise (1848-1939) was the fourth daughter and sixth child of Queen Victoria, a sculptor and artist, and supporter of the feminist movement. In March 1871 she married John Campbell, Marquess of Lore and they lived in Canada for a number of years. The room was taken over by Princess Beatrice when her sister married. -
