Roger Fenton (1819-69)
The Prince of Wales and Prince Alfred with Mr Gibbs 8 - 8 Feb 1854
-
Glass plate negative of a full-length group portrait of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910), later Edward VII, and his brother Prince Alfred (1844-1900) with their tutor Mr Frederick Waymouth Gibbs (1821-98). They all pose on a raised platform, facing the camera. Mr Gibbs sits centrally on a draped pedestal with his legs crossed. He rests his hand on the shoulder of the Prince of Wales who stands beside him to the left. Prince Alfred, on the right, half sits on the draped pedestal and gazes up at his tutor. There is a top hat on the floor, on the far right side of the frame.
The negative has been masked out, indicating the photographer's intention to crop the work to the smaller frame.
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed. Several prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCINs 2905991, 2306450 and 2900016).Provenance
