Glass plate negative showing a photograph of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910) placed under a sheet perforated with round apertures of various sizes. The prince's head can be seen though one of the apertures, indicating the photographer's intention to isolate that area for future usage.
The portrait was taken by Roger Fenton (1819-69) in 1854 and depicts the prince in full-length, dressed as 'Winter' for a performance of 'Tableaux of the Seasons' performed in Windsor Castle on 10 February 1854. Prints from this negative exist in the Collection (e.g. RCIN 2905998).
The glass plate negative has been photographed showing the coated side and therefore the image appears laterally reversed.
