'Sweet Anne Page' from the Merry Wives of Windsor, after a painting by William Powell Frith 1857
-
Photograph of the painting 'Sweet Anne Page' by William Powell Frith (1819-1909). The painting depicts Act 1 scene 1 from The Merry Wives of Windsor when Anne Page invites her suitor, Slender, into her father's house and is of a three-quarter length portrait of Anne Page, standing, facing three-quarters to the right. She turns her head to look at the viewer. She wears a fur lined jacket and light colour dress. Part of an identification number can be seen in the lower left corner.
At the time of the photograph, the painting was in the collection of George Charnley Dewhurst, a cotton manufacturer and art collector who lent it to the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857 and the Royal Jubilee Exhibition of 1887, also in Manchester. The painting is now held by Glasgow Museums.
