This portrait is from Prince Philip’s first sitting with Yousuf Karsh and was taken at Clarence House. While Karsh often used a dark background for male sitters and lighter backgrounds for female ones, here he opted for the opposite effect, using a strong key light to the right to bring out the prince’s facial features and complexion.
