Prince Albert (1819-1861) 1846
Marble | 191.1 cm (whole object) | RCIN 2070
-
Full length marble statue of Prince Albert wearing classical armour consisting of a breastplate, pteruges and kilt, chased with emblems of the British Isles and Coburg, with a cloak over his left shoulder. His left hand rests on the hilt of his sheathed sword; his right holds a circular shield chased with dolphins and St.George and the dragon. On his right shoulder-strap is a relief of Neptune and on the breastplate a winged Victory with a palm in her left hand. The pteruges in the outer/upper row are carved in relief with the national flowers: thistle, rose and shamrock, and the badge of Coburg.
This statue represents the young Prince Albert's own vision of his role as royal consort, 'fighting the good fight’ in defence of both the Queen (represented by the figure of Victory/Victoria on his breastplate) and the country (the national symbols of the British kingdoms and of Coburg). It is the second version of Wolff ’s 1841–2 statue (RCIN 42028). In this version, the sculptor has addressed Prince Albert’s concern that the first version was ‘too undressed’ by lengthening the kilt by approximately two inches, covering the top of the right arm with drapery, and the addition of the sandals which partly cover the prince’s feet.
