Marble bust of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, facing forward with austere look and receding hairline with sparse curls, on square cut base.
This marble portrait bust of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, by the English sculptor George Gamon Adams is a replica of the original marble portrait bust, commissioned to the artist by the Duke’s heir in 1852, for the family country home, Stratfield Saye, in Hampshire.
The bust, which depicts the Duke of Wellington with contemporary brushed hair and bare shoulders and chest, was based on his death mask, which was also made by Adams. The bust was a successful commission and Adams made several versions of it.Provenance
Purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Letter enclosing bill for £105 dated 16th March 1853 (Ref WCA 982/8/3344).
