Full length marble statue of a seated Siren playing a lyre. Statues of classicist mythological subjects like this Siren playing the lyre were fashionable in the nineteenth century. In Rome, Steinhausser had worked as an assistant in the studio of the famous Danish neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thordvalsen, whose influence can be appreciated in this work.
Provenance
This sculpture was acquired for Buckingham Palace in the early years of Queen Victoria's reign.
