Photograph of HRH Prince Edward (b. 1964), later the Earl of Wessex (then aged 5) meeting the American Astronaut Mr. Neil Armstrong (1930-2012), Commander of Apollo II. In the background, HM Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926) welcomes Colonel Michael Collins (b. 1930) and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1921-2021), greets Mrs. Janet Armstrong. On the left of picture stands HRH Princess Anne (b. 1950), later Princess Royal and HRH Prince Andrew (b. 1960), later the Duke of York.
Following active service as a Naval Aviator during the Korean War, for which he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Neil Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 space mission to the moon in 1969. With Michael Collins remaining in the Command Module, Armstrong left the Apollo Lunar module on July 21st 1969 as the first person to set foot on the surface of the moon, followed by fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin. -
