Following active service as a Naval Aviator during the Korean War, for which he was awarded the Korean Service Medal, Neil Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 space mission to the moon in 1969. With Michael Collins remaining in the Command Module, Armstrong left the Apollo Lunar module on July 21st 1969 as the first person to set foot on the surface of the moon, followed by fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
