It was the initiative of Falkland Island Councillors to ask the local Craft Group to produce an appropriate gift for Her Majesty The Queen to mark her Golden Jubilee.The table ws made by Councillor Roger Edwards. It is made of a piece of ash donated by the Falkland Islands Company, brought to the Islands in the late nineteenth century.

The tapestry is the work of many people - members of the Craft Group took it to locations such as schools, the hospital and major shops, inviting Islanders and members of Her Majesty's Armed Forces posted to the Falkland Islands to contribute to the work. Those who doubted their own skill in cross-stitch could instead sponsor a stitch by someone else; the funds gathered in this way contributed to the purchase of a bus for older members of the community. In total, 264 people added a stitch, and over 500 people contributed more than £1200 towards the purchase of the bus.

Donald Lamont, then Governor of the Falkland Islands remarked that the table was sent as a 'symbol of the great affection an loyalty felt towards The Queen by all the people of the Falkland Islands and the members of Her Majesty's Armed Forces'.
