Model of a bullock-cart and driver nineteenth century
-
A carved ivory model of a two-wheeled cart with slatted platform, drawn by two oxen wearing a yoke and driven by a figure seated on top holding the reins in one hand and a pole in the other. The model stands on a rectangular base on four turned feet.
The region of Brahampur, also spelt 'Berhampore', in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal (India) was renowned for its ivory carved models. From the late eighteenth century, the growing presence of British tourists and officials in India led for craftsmen based in Brahampur to produce typical 'Indian scenes' such as this example as souvenirs for these patronsProvenance
Recorded during Queen Victoria's reign in the Queen's Drawing Room, Osborne House in 1876.
