-
Sèvres soft-paste porcelain pair of bowls with gilded decoration. Posies of flowers (roses, anemones, asters) and scattered sprigs, in some cases disguising imperfections in the paste, are painted in polychrome on the inside and outside of the bowl. Cabbage-leaf design, the raised leaves, edged with gold, are painted with a feathered blue border terminating in outward-turned blue and gold scrolls. The intervening areas have a moulded, feathered gold border. The flowers include roses, primulas, convolvulus, forget-me-nots, asters, tulips, crown imperial fritillaries.
Provenance
Possibly bought in Paris for George IV by François Benois in 1814. The entry in his bill dated 16 May 1814 reads: ‘2 Saladiers Do [de Sèvres] feuilles de choux 52 [francs]’.
