A set of Japanese porcelain dishes, saucer-shaped, with a ten-pointed rim with brown-glazed edge. Painted across the face is a scene with two Chinese scholars in a pavilion under a pine tree; another scholar accompanied by a boy is approaching over a bridge. Round the outside is a leafy scroll border, and on the base, a single blue ring and square mark, fuku (good fortune).
An identical dish from the same famous early eighteenth-century collection of Augustus II ‘the Strong’ at Dresden was among a group presented by Queen Victoria to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1860 (Mus. No. 7331-1860).
Text adapted from Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty The Queen: Volume II.Provenance
Augustus II ‘the Strong’, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, by 1741. On each base, the engraved inventory mark of Augustus II ‘The Strong’, ‘N: 469’ over a wavy line, picked out in black. It seems likely these were acquired through family connections in Germany.
