After the death of George Adams, senior in 1772, the family business of making scientific instruments passed to his son, also named George. The business retained its position as instrument makers to the king, and, in 1787, was also appointed optician to the Prince of Wales (the future George IV). In the 1780s Adams began to write handbooks on various aspects of science.
