Between 1880 and 1882 Prince Albert Victor and Prince George of Wales (later King George V), the two eldest sons of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), undertook a round-the-world cruise on the HMS 'Bacchante'. John Neale Dalton, who had been tutor to the two princes since 1871, accompanied them as chaplain and tutor. The young princes' tour diaries, edited and expanded by Dalton, were published in two volumes following their return. King George V gave these volumes to Queen Mary in the early years of their marriage, signing them 'To Darling May, from G.'
