George IV's fishing tackle, made in 1824 for his use at Virginia Water; the equipment is housed in a faded red leather case stamped with the Royal Coat of Arms. Comprising: tooled red leather case for fishing equipment, royal coat of arms on lid; seven sections of fishing rod, varnished dark wood, engraved brass fittings; handle section of fishing rod, brass with engraved crown and inscription; knife of varnished dark wood spear with brass fittings at top and bottom; rod case of crimson silk; blue silk moire fly book containing a selection of flys in a stamped red velvet case, with crowned GR cypher and national emblems; metal hinged ring, engraved with foliate design; tweezers of silvered metal with ring turned handles; reel with line, brass with bone handle, inscribed with crowned GIVR cypher and 'Temple Bar Ustonson Maker to His Majesty'; bone reel, line and float attached, with gut line in a stamped red velvet case, with crowned GR cypher and national emblems. This fishing tackle was made by Mrs Maria Ustonson (1784-1856) in 1824 and returned for a re-fit in 1828, at a cost of £196 10s. Upon completion she was given permission to put it on display for a few days before returning it to the George IV. The Times gave an lengthy description of it on 21 May 1828. On 1 June 1824 Maria Ustonson became Royal Warrant Holder to King George IV and was re-appointed by William IV on his accession. She later supplied tackle to Queen Victoria. Maria had taken over the business from her first husband Charles Ustonson (d.1821) who had in turn inherited it from his relatives. The Ustonson business was started in 1761 by Onesimus Ustonton (d.1791).

Purchased in 1824 by George IV for use at Virginia Water, the lake in Windsor Great Park, from M. Ustonson, 204 Fleet Street, Temple Bar.
