This book is part of the Modern-Day Miniature Library, a contemporary collection of miniature handwritten and hand-bound books which has been assembled to celebrate 100 years since Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House was completed in 1924.

Of the nearly 600 books placed on the shelves of the Dolls' House Library in the 1920s, over 170 are tiny manuscripts handwritten by the most notable authors of the time. Together, these create a time capsule of literary culture.

Echoing the process of a century ago, today's writers were again asked to write by hand in miniature format. Their little pages were bound by leading contemporary designer-binders. After being displayed in an exhibition at Windsor Castle during 2024, the new collection of doll-size books will be kept together in the Royal Library.

One of two pieces to be set in Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House itself, A.N. Wilson's poem, written specially for the centenary project, is about dolls named Swiss and Ab living hidden in the House, wondering where Queen Mary – who knew of their existence – has gone. The little book has been bound Peter Jones, a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders. Peter Jones' binding is based on imagery from A.N. Wilson's poem: on the front board the dolls can be glimpsed hidden on the back seat of one of the Dolls' House's cars, while a gigantic figure peers at them from above. Over eighty pieces of leather, added using both onlay and inlay techniques, can be counted in the binding. Acetate was used for the car's window, and the dolls were tooled in gold. The miniature book is designed to open fully, with brass rods used at the joints of the spine with the boards.
