Between 1921 and 1924, many of Britain and Ireland's most significant writers contributed handwritten books to the miniature library of Queen Mary's Dolls' House. The collection of tiny manuscripts was organised by Princess Marie Louise, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and the writer E.V. Lucas.
The historian and architect Sir Reginald Blomfield claims in the title of his Dolls’ House manuscript that it is a translation from a fairy tale by the French author Charles Perrault. In fact, his miniature book is entirely his own invention, written specially for the Dolls' House. It is a description of the palatial house of the fictional Marquis of Carabas, with a moat ‘full of beautiful trout, [which] came right up to the walls of the house, so that you could fish from the windows; or if a guest misbehaved the Marquis could lower him into the moat till he became sober.Provenance
Sent to Princess Marie Louise by Sir Reginald Blomfield for inclusion in Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House Library, 17 January 1923
