Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (1809-1892) was, and remains, one of the most popular English poets. He held the position of poet laureate for much of Queen Victoria's reign, from 1850 until his death in 1892. This miniature book, produced for Queen Mary's dollshouse, contains Tennyson's poem 'Crossing the Bar', which whilst he was crossing the Solent in 1889. He felt it was his best work, and exhorted his son, on his death bed, to make sure it was put at the end of all subsequent collections of his poetry.
