[Autograph book of the stage] 1922
-
Between 1921 and 1924, many of Britain and Ireland's most significant writers contributed handwritten books to the miniature library of Queen Mary's Dolls' House. The collection of tiny manuscripts was organised by Princess Marie Louise, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and the writer E.V. Lucas.
The autograph book of the Stage is one of four miniature autograph books included in the Library of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House. The others are books signed by people prominent in politics, in the navy, and in the army (now lost). The book was bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, one of the leading binderies of the early-twentieth century, in dark-green leather with the outline of a stage tooled in gold on the front cover. It was then sent to actors, theatre managers and other significant figures of the London stage for their signatures. The first name signed in the book is that of Dame Ellen Terry (1847–1928), one of the most famous actresses of late-Victorian Britain. In total the book contains 67 signatures, including those of:
Edmund Gwenn
Squire Bancroft
Matheson Lang
Mary Jerrold
Meggie Albanesi
Ellis Jeffreys
Violet Vanbrugh
Courtice Pounds
Irene Vanbrugh
Dion Boucicault
George Grossmith Jnr
Sybil Thorndike
Lena Ashwell
Charles Hawtrey
Norman Forbes-Robertson
Constance Collier
Marion Terry
Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson
