This issue of the literary annual, 'The Keepsake', which carried Charles Dickens’ short story 'To be Read at Dusk', was given to Queen Victoria by her mother, the Duchess of Kent, as a Christmas present in 1851. The inscription (copied here) reads: To My beloved Victoria from Her affectionately attached Mother Christmas 1851 After 'The Keepsake' folded in 1857, Marguerite Power, the editor from 1851, struggled financially, but Charles Dickens took an interest in her career, helping her to find a publisher for her final book, and accepting her submissions to his periodicals, just as he had contributed to hers. With William Thackeray and John Forster, he organised a subscription of £200 for her. This object was displayed at the Charles Dickens Reception at Buckingham Palace, 2012.
