Turban ornament mid-nineteenth century

A turban ornament with a large cabochon ruby in its centre encircled by diamonds, with cabochon emeralds hanging above and below the ornament. Attached to either side of the turban ornament are bands of alternating gold tablets inlaid with emeralds, rubies and diamonds. These are held in place by a red silk cord to allow for the turban ornament to curve around the head when worn. Turban ornaments were worn by the Princely rulers of India to denote their royal status.
Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Ramchandra Deo III, Maharaja of Jaypore.
The Maharaja of Jaypore, who met the Prince of Wales in Madras December 1875, was a zamindar (landowner) from modern day Odisha in southeast India. -
